Plan your trip
Seven hundred and forty steps up a crack in the rock to a 360° viewpoint over the reservoir. Everything worth knowing before you climb.
The climb takes about thirty minutes on a staircase built into the crack of the rock. At the top there is a viewpoint with a 360° view over the reservoir, its islands and its peninsulas.
Go early: by mid-morning there is already a queue. Between going up, staying at the top and coming down, allow about two hours in total.
The operator of the attraction lists summit hours of 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Entry was COP 35,000 in 2026.
Fees and hours are set by the operator and they change, so check them on its website before you go.
The rock is about 5 kilometres from the centre of Guatapé, on the road towards El Peñol. You can get there by car, by public transport or by motochiva, the local motorbike taxi, from the town.
The attraction has a car park: the operator lists COP 5,000 an hour for cars and COP 4,000 for motorbikes.
In 1954, when the valley was still dry, a group of local people reached the top for the first time, working their way up over several days with planks and makeshift supports.
In the 1980s, some people from Guatapé set out to paint the town's name on the rock in huge white letters. They managed the G and part of the U before El Peñol stepped in: the rock sits on the border between the two municipalities.
